About the full-size Grumman FF-1

The Grumman FF-1 was a landmark aircraft in the early history of Grumman's relationship with the U.S. Navy. Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation had been founded in 1929 by Leroy R. Grumman and associates. The company initially became known for producing amphibious floats with retractable landing gear for Navy aircraft. Grumman subsequently proposed applying the retractable-gear concept to a completely new fighter rather than simply modifying an existing aircraft. The Navy awarded a contract for the prototype in 1931.

The resulting aircraft, initially designated XFF-1, was a two-seat, single-engine biplane. Its first flight took place on 29 December 1931, with the prototype powered by a Wright R-1820 radial engine. During testing, the aircraft demonstrated surprisingly high speed for its period. The National Naval Aviation Museum records the prototype reaching 195 mph with its original 616-hp engine and approximately 210 mph after installation of a more powerful 750-hp R-1820F.

One of the aircraft's most important technical features was its retractable main landing gear. The wheels folded sideways into the fuselage, an arrangement that became characteristic of subsequent Grumman fighters. The FF-1 also used an all-metal stressed-skin fuselage and an enclosed cockpit, incorporating construction techniques that represented a significant advance over many contemporary naval aircraft.

The aircraft became affectionately known as “Fifi” among its crews. The first production FF-1s entered U.S. Navy service in 1933, principally with VF-5B, which operated the type from the aircraft carrier USS Lexington. The type was already being overtaken by rapidly developing single-seat fighters by the middle of the decade, and FF-1s were withdrawn from frontline fighter service during the 1935–36 period.

Some surviving FF-1s were converted into FF-2 trainer aircraft with dual controls and subsequently served with Naval Reserve units. The related SF-1 was developed as a two-seat scouting version. The wider FF/SF production total is often given as 116 aircraft, including the various U.S. and licence-built versions, although U.S. Navy museum records distinguish the 64 FF/SF aircraft produced directly by Grumman from later licence production.

The design also had an international afterlife. Canadian Car and Foundry produced an improved licence-built version designated G-23, known as the Goblin in Canadian service. Related aircraft saw service in several countries, including Canada and Spain, and an example of the type was involved in the Spanish Civil War.

The FF-1 is consequently important not because of a long combat career, but because it marked the beginning of a remarkably successful line of Grumman naval aircraft. Its combination of retractable landing gear, enclosed cockpit and robust metal construction helped establish design features that would become increasingly common in carrier aviation.
