Description
Description
This tram was originally part of the 701/735 series of the Lisbon Railway Company, which built them between 1936 and 1940.
These trams were considered the safest in Lisbon, equipped with a reinforced braking system. They operated on the most difficult lines, such as the 12, 25, and 28, with gradients of up to 12%. They were also the toughest single-adhesion tram lines in the world.
It is equipped with five types of brakes: pneumatic, mechanical, electric, electromagnetic via skids, and mechanical on skids. It is powered by two powerful 45-hp Metropolitan Vickers electric motors and a Brill 21-E truck built by Maley & Tauton. Its body is of the standard Lisbon type, derived from Brill's American designs, its most notable feature being its highly convex roof.
It remained in its original state until the series was refurbished between 1985 and 1987, when, to adapt it for single-agent (driver/collector), pneumatic and flashing doors were installed, and the doors on one side were closed.
Starting in 1995, they began to be retired and replaced by the refurbished 500-series trams , and several units remain in operation for charter services and occasional reinforcements to regular service.
