Description
Vintage O.S. FS-60 10cc four-stroke glow R/C aircraft engine, manufactured in Japan by O.S. Engine / Ogawa Seisakusho.
A highly collectible early O.S. FS-60, one of the most historically significant model aircraft engines ever produced. Introduced in 1976, the FS-60 was O.S.'s first four-stroke model engine and is regarded by O.S. as the engine that established the company's long-running four-stroke range. Its distinctive four-stroke exhaust note and scale-like appearance made it particularly popular with scale R/C aircraft modellers.
This example is the classic open-rocker version, with the two exposed rocker arms and rear-mounted pushrods clearly visible. The engine is marked O.S. FS-60 and Made in Japan, with serial number 18563.
The FS-60 is a single-cylinder, air-cooled, overhead-valve four-stroke glow engine with a displacement of 9.95cc (0.607 cu in). It has a 24mm bore and 22mm stroke, with an original specified practical operating range of approximately 2,000–10,000 rpm. O.S. documentation gives an output of approximately 0.6 PS at 10,000 rpm and a weight of approximately 560g for the original specification.
The original FS-60 was designed to run on standard model glow fuel and used the special O.S. Type F four-stroke glow plug. Period instructions recommend propellers such as 12×6 and 13×6, reflecting the relatively low-revving, high-torque characteristics of the four-stroke design.
The FS-60 remained in production for more than seven years before being replaced by the FS-61 in the early 1980s. During its production life there were a number of detail changes, including changes to the cam profile, rocker material, carburettor and cylinder-head construction.

This is a used vintage engine showing considerable age-related cosmetic wear, tarnishing and staining consistent with its age. The exposed valve gear, pushrods, carburettor and other components are present as shown in the photographs.
The engine turns over freely. It has not been tested running, so compression, bearings, valve condition, carburettor operation and overall running performance have not been verified. The engine should be inspected, lubricated and checked carefully before any attempt is made to run it.
A particularly desirable engine for a vintage R/C aircraft, scale model, restoration project or collection. The early exposed-rocker FS-60 is especially interesting from a historical perspective as it represents the beginning of O.S.'s highly successful four-stroke engine range
