Description
The Boeing F4B-4 was one of the final and most advanced versions of Boeing’s renowned F4B biplane fighter series, serving with both the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps during the early 1930s.
The aircraft represented the pinnacle of American naval biplane fighter design before the rapid transition to modern monoplane fighters later in the decade.
Powered by the dependable Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp radial engine, the F4B-4 delivered strong performance, excellent agility, and the durability required for demanding operations from aircraft carriers and coastal air stations.
The aircraft featured a metal fuselage with fabric-covered wings, strengthened landing gear, and a distinctive headrest fairing behind the cockpit, giving the F4B-4 its characteristic silhouette.
In US Marine Corps service, the F4B-4 was used primarily for fleet defence, training, and expeditionary duties.
Marine squadrons often operated from shore bases in support of naval operations, and their aircraft frequently carried colourful squadron markings typical of the interwar “yellow wing” era of American military aviation.
Armed with two forward-firing .30 calibre machine guns, the F4B-4 provided reliable fighter protection during a period of rapid development in military aviation.
Although soon superseded by newer monoplane fighters by the mid-1930s, the Boeing F4B-4 remains an iconic aircraft of early US naval aviation and a classic example of the elegant biplane fighters of the period.
