Description
The PzKpfw IV was with 8500 built units the most developed tanks for the Wehrmacht and formed up to 1945 the basis of the Panzerdivisionen Germany. The planning and development of the tank went back to 1930. At the end of 1934 began the work on the prototypes for this vehicle, which had been subjected by the Army Army Office various tests. These were completed in 1935/36 with the addition to the company Krupp for the construction of the tank. During the production period improvements and upgrades have always been part of the series. While the short 7.5 cm KwK 37 L / 24 was still used at the start of production, the 7.5 cm KwK 40 L / 48 with a further increased puncture force of the ammunition is available from spring 1943 onwards.
On the eastern front and the Battle of Kursk, the PzKpfw IV was the most important component of the armored division of the Wehrmacht and formed the backbone of the armed forces.
