German Sturmpioniere - special sapper/engineer units trained to storm well fortified enemy structures. German sapper units were part of the front detachments of the advancing decisions. They provided the phenomenal mobility of Wehrmacht Units. To quickly clear the bridge, to storm the defence lines, t disarm the enemy's pillboxes - these tasks were performed by the "Sturmpioniere". They became the backbone of the assault groups that broke through the Stalin line.
