DC Sabre 1.49 CU . CM In Box Vintage Model Engine Diesel Second Hand (Box 109)

D.C. Sabre was launched by Davies Charlton in November 1955,  This 1.5 cc diesel engine was evidently modelled on the pre-existing Alan Allbon designed D.C. Merlin. Regrettably, the engine was not scaled up effectively and was executed in a manner that clearly prioritised production costs over performance.

Undoubtedly, had Alan Allbon not departed D.C. five months prior, the engine would have boasted superior power output, reduced weight, enhanced mechanical reliability, and decreased vibration. These shortcomings, unfortunately, became synonymous with the D.C. Sabre. Nevertheless, it remained a popular choice for many decades due to its affordability, being the lowest cost 1.5 cc Diesel engine on the market in the UK for a significant period of time.

The D.C. Sabre featured in the image is equipped with Davies Charlton's QUICKSTART spring starter, indicating it was manufactured after 1958, the cylindrical fuel tanks were a feature of the pre 70s engines, initially in aluminium later in opaque plastic, the 70s engines were supplied with a transparent flat sided plastic fuel tank, it therefore seems this example was produced around 1965 give or take a few years.

It is of note that the D.C. QUICKSTART spring starter divided opinions among D.C. engine owners, with some strongly disliking it while others thought it was a valuable addition. The former group presumably were already experienced at starting diesel engines, whereas the latter group were probably new to the model aircraft hobby and starting diesel engines in particular.
