Description
Merlin in October 1954, it was marketed as the Allbon Merlin, named after its designer, Alan Allbon. The original Merlin featured an un-anodised cylinder jacket and lacked both a fuel tank and a spinner.
In mid-1955, a new version of the highly successful Merlin was released: the Allbon Super Merlin. This model was distinguished by a red anodised cooling jacket, a spinner nut, and a transparent plastic fuel tank; all other features remained unchanged.
In 1958, after Allbon’s departure from D.C. in 1955, his name was dropped, and the Merlin engines became simply the D.C. Merlin and D.C Super Merlin.
In 1978, following a steady decline in engine sales D.C. introduced a cosmetically updated Merlin, which featured a light green anodised cylinder jacket and an aluminium fuel tank. Apart from these changes, the engine remained the same.
Finally, in 1981, a second version of the green-head Merlin was launched. This was again purely a cosmetic revision, with a dark green anodised cylinder jacket and a semi-opaque plastic fuel tank. Without the drive of D.C.’s owner Hefin Davies who died in late 1980, sales of the D.C. engine range steadily declined and within five years came to an end.
