History
From the dawn of powered flight, aeroplanes and the daring pilots who flew them have captured the world's imagination, with single-seat fighters being particularly captivating. In Britain, the Supermarine Spitfire has stood out as a symbol of excellence. Known as the nation's defender during its darkest times, the Spitfire remained active throughout World War II and is as renowned today as when it first arrived at RAF Duxford in August 1938.
The Spitfire's Mark Vc version, although initially a stopgap to counter the latest Messerschmitt Bf 109, became the most produced variant due to its success. This model enabled Fighter Command to take the offensive, serving with Allied forces globally and contributing to the Spitfire's legendary status.
Updating the Royal Air Force's history to the present, the Lockheed Martin® F-35® Lightning represents a cutting-edge, multi-role aircraft patrolling British skies. As a fifth-generation combat aircraft, it is seen as a significant technological advancement over current aircraft. Although early in its service life, the F-35 is poised to build its own legacy, potentially rivaling that of the unmatched Spitfire.
