Sword (Plastic Aircraft Kit) Sword SW48014 Gannet AEW.3
The Short SB.6 Seamew was a British naval aircraft developed in the early 1950s as a lightweight anti-submarine and maritime patrol aircraft for the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm.
Designed by Short Brothers, the Seamew was intended to operate from smaller aircraft carriers, providing coastal reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare capabilities during the early Cold War period.
Powered by a single Armstrong Siddeley Mamba turboprop engine, the Seamew featured a distinctive high-wing design, a large glazed cockpit for excellent visibility, and a ventral radome housing search radar used for maritime surveillance.
Its internal weapons bay allowed it to carry torpedoes, depth charges, or other anti-submarine ordnance, making it suitable for patrol and attack roles against submerged threats.
Although innovative in concept, the Seamew suffered from performance and reliability issues during its development.
As a result, only a small number were produced before the programme was cancelled in favour of more capable aircraft.
Despite its short service life, the Seamew remains an interesting and unusual chapter in British naval aviation history.
This model kit captures the distinctive lines and unique features of the Short SB.6 Seamew, offering aviation enthusiasts and modellers the opportunity to build a rare Fleet Air Arm aircraft from the early Cold War era.
