The full-size Wildcat was a rugged U.S. Navy carrier fighter that entered service in 1940; British Martlets were heavily used by the Fleet Air Arm from carriers and escort carriers in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, providing fighter protection and anti-shipping capability.
