The E.V entered service in August 1918 and was exceptionally light and fast for its size, but structural failures led to its withdrawal and modification before the improved D.VIII designation was adopted. The aircraft had a single parasol-mounted wing, compact fuselage and rotary engine, giving it a distinctive appearance.
